At the heart of this campaign is the idea that true healing comes from a sense of community. The Tiny Home Village is designed to be more than just a place to live—it’s a place where survivors can come together, share their stories, and support one another. We aim to create an environment where families can relax, cook meals together, play games like cornhole, and share their journey of healing as a community. Our hope is to turn each tiny home into a “hale,” a place not only for shelter but for growth, support, and joy. By helping families establish a new routine, form bonds with their neighbors, and begin to rebuild a sense of normalcy, we believe they can start to process and heal from the trauma of the fires. This is more than just providing material items; it's about nurturing a space where life can begin again, filled with hope, dignity, and strength.
The devastating fires of August 8, 2023, left a profound impact on Lahaina, displacing thousands of families who suddenly found themselves without a place to call home. These fires not only destroyed buildings and possessions but also uprooted entire communities, leaving survivors with uncertainty and loss. Since that tragic day, Aloha Ranch has dedicated its mission to supporting these displaced families, helping them rebuild their lives and rediscover hope. 450 families are finally beginning this new chapter of their lives at the Tiny Home Village above the Lahaina Civic Center. This vibrant new community has been created to provide a warm and supportive environment where families can find the security and comfort they've been yearning for. However, moving into these new homes is just the beginning of their journey toward rebuilding their lives.

On the hillside above Lahaina, a community of nearly 500 modular homes is taking shape. The first nine ʻohana moved in last week. The housing will be used for fire survivors for the next five years, and then be turned
over to the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands. HPR's Catherine Cluett Pactol has the latest on interim housing developments on Maui. toward rebuilding a sense of stability and normalcy.
We are committed to providing families with all the basic necessities needed to make their hales truly feel like a home. While these tiny homes come with the essentials for shelter, we know that creating a warm and livable space goes beyond just four walls. That’s why the ‘Hotels to Hales’ campaign focuses on supplying each family with domestic, community, and emotional needs. For our families, we provide essential household items like linens, dishes, cookware, cleaning supplies and more, to ensure they are able to create a functional and welcoming environment. For the the Tiny Home Village community, we address their needs by supplying pathway lighting, picnic tables, BBQ grills and shade sails that will create spaces for neighbors to gather, share meals, play games and build relationships. For our families’ health and wellness, Aloha Ranch is fostering emotional support by providing opportunities for community-building events like potlucks, talking story, and activities that encourage families to connect and bond over shared trauma and shared experiences. These connections are vital to help foster community healing among our west Maui community.
For most of these families, the past year has been a journey of resilience, bouncing from one hotel room to another, unable to truly settle down or start anew. We believe that these survivors deserve a stable and welcoming place to rebuild their lives—a place that feels like home, where they can experience the comfort, support, and sense of belonging that has been missing. The "Hotels to Hales" Campaign is designed to bridge this gap. Our mission is to support these families as they transition from the temporary shelter of hotels into their new permanent tiny homes, or "hales." We aim to ensure that they do not just move into a structure but into a community—a place where they can live with dignity, security, and the support of their neighbors.
